Updated: Possible tornadoes near Maidstone and Turtleford

Meteorologists are tracking severe thunderstorms capable of producing very strong wind gusts, up to nickel-sized hail and heavy rain.

SASKATCHEWAN — At 6:25 p.m., Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm that is possibly producing a tornado. Damaging winds, large hail and locally intense rainfall are also possible.

This is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation. The possible tornado is located near Maidstone and is tracking to the northeast at 30 km/h. The possible tornado is located between Maidstone and Paynton and is tracking to the east at 30 km/h.

Another critical tornado alert has been issued for a possible tornado located near Turtleford tracking to the northeast at 30 km/h. The possible tornado is located near Mervin and is tracking to the northeast at 30 km/h.

SaskAlert says conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain in some areas of the province, presently along a swath from Lloydminster to Assiniboia and down to the border, including Saskatoon and the area west of Regina.

Environment Canada says a low-pressure system over central Alberta is expected to trigger scattered thunderstorms this afternoon. Some of these thunderstorms may reach severe thresholds, and several areas are under warnings.

This severe thunderstorm watch may be expanded eastward as the evening progresses. There are also thunderstorm warnings in addition to the watches, which Environment Canada says are capable of producing very strong wind gusts and up to nickel-sized hail and heavy rain.
