That’s how the federal Liberals decided to react to a suggestion made by an all-party committee on electoral reform that a new electoral system should be as proportional – that is, a party that gets 39.47 per cent of the votes should get as close to 39.47 per cent of the seats – as possible while maintaining the connection between voters and their MP.
Of course, that type of electoral reform is no longer desirable for a governing party that got 39.47 per cent of the votes in the 2015 election and 54.44 per cent of the seats.
So therefore, there’s the need to make something simple complex to make it undesirable to the public – especially sad seeing that the electoral reform committee was meant for adult politicians to work together to come up with something that could work better for all of us.
The thing is, we can make anything complicated and look undesirable by using math forumlas.
For example, BAC = (fb x nd x dv x ap x sg/bw x ff x 1,000) – (mf x hr). Know what the heck that’s about? Me neither, but I do know that if your BAC – Blood Alcohol Content – is higher than 0.04, there’s been a law just passed in this province that means that you’re getting your car impounded for three days.
Or I could make my opinions unreadable by saying that this missive is contrived to elucidate my contemplations on a given subject.
Not everybody can be good at math or complex English. That doesn’t mean that politicians should exploit that to shut down discussion about the issues that we face in this country.
