OPINION: Celebrating small business week

We rely on small business so much in our communities that we sometimes forget how important they are to the local economy. While we can get away with that the rest of the year, the coming week – Oct. 15 to 21 – is small business week.

We rely on small business so much in our communities that we sometimes forget how important they are to the local economy.

While we can get away with that the rest of the year, the coming week – Oct. 15 to 21 – is small business week. This is a chance to remind ourselves just how much they contribute, from providing the goods and service we use daily to providing jobs that provide the wages all of us need to survive.

Many owners of small business – unless they are fantastically lucky – spend countless hours making sure that everything is working properly. If they didn’t, they stand to lose a lot.

Small business week is also a good time to recount the stories about how our local businesses were created, as well as find out how they work to serve local customers. That’s why we’re releasing a special in this paper that does just that for Tisdale businesses.

Small business taxes are also a large point of discussion right now, with the federal government planning changes. They have admitted that there has to be some changes to their plan to counteract some of the unintended effects, but what that looks like is yet to be determined.

When small business does well, the entire community does well. That’s something we all got to remember – from the federal government right down to the local newspapers.
