A team with a mix of women鈥檚, junior and mixed curling experience that鈥檚 ranked second overall in Saskatchewan is competing for the top spot at the provincials.
鈥淭he team is excited to continue building throughout the provincial championship,鈥 said Jolene Campbell, Team Streifel鈥檚 third. 鈥淲e are definitely at the provincial with the goal of becoming Team Saskatchewan, but the focus for this team is to improve each and every time we step out on the ice.鈥
Team Streifel is made up of skip Kristen Streifel, third Campbell, second Callan Hamon, second Dayna Demers, lead Breanne Knapp and coach Rob Meakin.
It鈥檚 Streifel鈥檚 first year playing in the women鈥檚 provincial, after aging out of the juniors, where she competed four times.
鈥淜risten contacted me in the summer to see if I wanted to team up,鈥 said Campbell, adding the first time they played together was an event at Saskatoon. 鈥淚 always thought Kristen was a great player and she thought we could make a great team together.鈥
Campbell and Demers have played together for a few seasons. Last year they were both on Team Silvernagle, which made it to the women鈥檚 finals. When Demers found out she was pregnant with twins, her position was taken over by Hamon. Hamon and Campbell were on the same team when they won the provincials in 2016.
Campbell has competed in the women鈥檚 provincials 10 times and was the 2015 mixed national championship. She went on to represent Canada at the Mixed World Championship in Switzerland.
Knapp was a Olympic pre-trial finalist in 2017 and was the World Universiade Games silver medalist in 2015. This is her first women鈥檚 provincial.
Meakin joined the team as coach during playdowns.
鈥淗e is Breanne鈥檚 dad and has a wealth of curling knowledge and experience both as a player and a coach,鈥 Campbell said.
The third said she鈥檚 excited to play in Humboldt, where there鈥檚 friends and family close by.
鈥淲e are expecting good crowds and a fun week of curling against the best teams in Saskatchewan,鈥 Campbell said. 鈥淲e will put on a good show for the fans, hopefully winning some of them over and building our cheering section鈥
Team Streifel is based out of Regina鈥檚 Highland Curling Club. On the Canadian Team Ranking System, they are ranked 19th nationally.
