A tournament that aimed to memorialize those affected by the April 6 Humboldt Broncos bus crash raised $95,000 for the team.
The Humboldt Broncos Memorial Golf Tournament held Aug. 18 saw 36 teams and 144 golfers take part. The cheque was presented at the Oct. 12 home game against Notre Dame.
鈥淚t definitely went well,鈥� said Laurie Warford,鈥� the administrator for the tournament's trust. 鈥淏etter than we expected for our first year."
Warford, together with Colorado Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar and Winnipeg Jets NHL broadcaster Brian Munz, organized the tournament. She said the Bednar and Munz were amazed at how much money the event raised.
鈥淭hey were pretty impressed when the support we received from our sponsorships and everyone involved.鈥�
Jamie Brockman, the Broncos鈥� president, said the donation was huge.
鈥淵ou don鈥檛 sneeze at a $95,000 contribution to the bottom line of the organization.鈥�
He said he was humbled when he found out how much was raised.
鈥淟aurie, Jared and Brian put a lot of effort into this event for the organization and I know they weren't expecting it to be that high and honestly, I wasn鈥檛 either.鈥�
The president said the board has yet to discuss where the money will go, but it will be used in a fiscally responsible manner.
鈥淚t鈥檚 a special donation and we want to treat it specially as well.鈥�
Warford said she appreciated the efforts of everyone involved to make the tournament and the money raised possible. Planning has start for next year鈥檚 tournament, which will take place Aug. 24. Conexus Credit Union has committed to being the title sponsor for the next two years.
鈥淚t鈥檚 a way that our piece of the donation can generate a larger amount of funds for the Bronco organization,鈥� said Tammy Froats, the local branch manager.
Warford said Bednar and Munz are they鈥檙e looking forward to coming back and hosting in the coming years.
