MELFORT — After being impressed with the Melfort Mustangs for years, Porcupine Plain’s Trevor Logan will now be an important part of the organization.

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League team announced on June 26 that Logan had been hired as an assistant coach. The former Carrot River Outback Thunder Junior B head coach and general manager takes over for Dan Meyers, who resigned after four successful seasons.

“I have always had a desire to work with the Mustangs organization,” Logan said. “I played some hockey in town back in my younger days. The city and the organization were always top notch to me and I’m just excited for the great opportunity to learn and grow.”

Logan spent at least part of the last three hockey seasons with the Outback Thunder. In addition, he has experience coaching at the senior level, in minor hockey, and with the bantam AA North East Wolfpack.

“Trevor brings many years of hockey experience as a player and a coach to our program. The fact that he’s worked with junior hockey players recently is a huge asset to our team.” Mustangs head coach and general manager Trevor Blevins said in a team media release. “The upcoming season is going to be an exciting one and I’m looking forward to working with Trevor.”

Logan is excited about the opportunity with the Mustangs. The squad made it all the way to the SJHL finals last season.

“From what I’ve heard and seen, the team has a lot of solid young talent coming up the pipeline so that is definitely exciting,” Logan said. “I am very happy to be given the opportunity to work with and learn from a great organization and the great staff that they have.”

After guiding the Junior B Outback Thunder, he is looking forward to moving up to the next level. The married father will continue to live and work in the Porcupine Plain area.

“Junior A has a lot more opportunity to spend time on and off the ice with players who are focusing on hockey,” Logan said. “I think the biggest bonus will hopefully be seeing guys grow as men and players. Learning how teams operate at this level is something that I have always wanted to be a part of. I just didn’t think I had the time right now, but Trevor has been really good about working together on a schedule that works for both of us, so I’m very thankful it worked out.”

Growing up, Logan plated bantam AA and midget AA in Melfort. He also lived there for half a season while playing Junior B with Kinistino. Logan also played Junior B for Hudson Bay, senior AAA in Alberta, and senior hockey in Saskatchewan.
