HUMBOLDT — A project to repair a part of the Uniplex’s roof above an electrical tunnel has become larger than expected.

The roof experienced water leaks for several years. During the 2021 budget process, the city set aside $30,000 for the repairs.

“A tender was put out for completion of the project and upon closer inspection it was determined that the damage was not restricted to a small section but that the entire roof section had been impacted,” said a report to council on the issue.

The roof section in question covers the refrigeration plant room and south arena entrance.

At a June 16 special meeting, council voted to accept a $81,800 plus tax bid to replace the entire roof section. The winning bid was made by Flynn Canada out of Saskatoon. The other bid, at $98,600, was made by Humboldt Lumber Mart. City staff said they are estimating the project will cost $95,000, which includes PST and a 10 per cent contingency in case more problems are found.

“It's important to note that this is an ongoing maintenance project, so we've just stepped this up at a faster pace, recognizing that there was some additional work that needed to be done on a sooner than later basis,” said Michael Behiel, Humboldt’s mayor, adding that it was better to do to it right the first time rather than do a continual patchwork.

“We will prevent, hopefully, future issues from occurring for a longer term by taking the proactive approach.”

Michael Ulriksen, the city’s leisure services director, said the extra cost will have to come from savings found throughout the rest of the year or will have to come through a contingency reserve at year end.
