TISDALE — The Town of Tisdale and RM of Connaught have formed an agreement where the RM will dispose all of their garbage at the Tisdale landfill.
“They’ve made the decision that now all their members will come this way and become members in our regional landfill,” said Brad Hvidston, Tisdale’s administrator.
“[We’re] just helping out our neighbouring municipalities.”
Before this, a portion of the population’s trash in the RM of Connaught would go to the Tisdale landfill, while the rest would be sent to the Boreal Area Regional Waste Authority (BARWA) landfill, south of Nipawin.
The RM sent their one-year notice to leave BARWA in January 2020.
Jamie Orr, the RM’s administrator, said that the decision to end their membership was based on financial feasibility.
“Their per capita rates are quite high, and we didn’t feel our rate payers should have to pay for that,” Orr said.
At BARWA, the 2021 rate each landfill partner has to pay is $135 per capita. At the Tisdale landfill, membership sits at $25 per capita.
As a result of the change, Hvidston said the landfill will receive more disposal fees. On the other hand, with more users, the landfill is expected to be busier and fill up quicker.
The exact amount of lifetime it will take out of the landfill has not been measured.
