MELFORT 鈥� The City of Melfort is starting a pilot project to add speed bumps to Alberta Street following several complaints from residents about speeding vehicles.
Due to the location of the Reynolds Central School, which teaches Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 6, part of the street is 30 kilometres per hour.
Glenn George, Melfort鈥檚 mayor, attributed the speeding problem to Melfort & Unit Comprehensive Collegiate (MUCC) students heading home after classes.
鈥淲e鈥檙e at a loss as to know what to do here. If we move the 30 kilometre sign back a couple blocks, they鈥檙e speeding anyhow 鈥� that鈥檚 not going to slow them down even for a minute,鈥� George said.
鈥淚 think the only way you can make people slow down is to make it cost them, like a voluntary tax.鈥�
Cpl. Kyle Wyonzek with the Melfort RCMP said the detachment isn鈥檛 aware of any specific problematic area at the location.
鈥淲e are constantly doing traffic and speed enforcement in that area due to it being a school zone,鈥� Wyonzek said. 鈥淒oing patrols and actively enforcing all violations of the Traffic Safety Act 鈥� speeding, seatbelt use, cellphones, distracted driving.鈥�
The speedbumps are planned to be installed in July.
