NIPAWIN 鈥� The Town of Nipawin has issued a temporary water restriction and is advising town residents to restrict water usage as much as possible.
Under the restriction, odd-numbered houses may water lawns and gardens on odd-numbered days, while even-numbered houses may water on even-numbered days. Regular water use such as showers, laundry, cooking or drinking are not impacted.
Barry Elliott, Nipawin鈥檚 administrator, said the restriction was due to a number of factors, with the biggest being work on the raw water wells at the water treatment plant.
Under regular circumstances, the reservoirs store about five days worth of water. As a result of the work, only two days worth of water is available.
鈥淲e just want to be sure that we have ample water in our reservoirs to handle the needs of the community if there鈥檚 a problem somewhere,鈥� Elliott said. 鈥淚f the fire department had to open a couple hydrants, a lot of water goes out really quick.鈥�
The restriction is temporary and will be lifted once the water treatment plant resumes full capacity.
This restriction doesn鈥檛 apply to sandpoint wells.
鈥淲e know in the dry conditions people are outside watering their lawns more frequently as they care about the look of their property,鈥� he said. 鈥淲e don鈥檛 expect this to be terribly long. If the odd-number of houses could just do their watering with town water on odd days and even-numbered houses on even days that would be helpful.鈥�
