NIPAWIN — The Nipawin RCMP have had eight calls over February regarding individuals breaking the public health order to isolate including both large gatherings in homes and persons breaking isolation.
According to Cpl. Josh Martin, those numbers have remained consistent over March.
“In the end we’re working with public health and the inspectors in public health to assure compliance but sometimes it’s an ongoing process,” Martin said.
“We’re struggling with the risks associated with the outbreak in early March as well. Obviously our numbers are pretty elevated right now, so we’re being as cautious as anyone.”
As of March 23, the Nipawin area has 54 active cases of the virus with 10 new cases.
Martin confirmed that at least one situation resulted in charges laid.
In December the provincial government increased the fine for non-compliance with emergency orders, setting the maximum fines at $7,500 for individuals and $100,000 for corporations. This is up from $2,000 for individuals and $10,000 for corporations.
“The light at the end of the tunnel is nearing and the challenge for everyone involved,” Martin said. “We just ask people to take precautions that are suggested by public health and the Saskatchewan Health Authority and we’ll get through this together.”
