October is Agriculture Month in Humboldt.

HUMBOLDT — Michael Behiel, Humboldt’s mayor, believes without the agriculture industry, Humboldt wouldn’t exist today.

“Quite frankly, if you take a look at the large portion of Humboldt without the agricultural component we would have likely dried up and disappeared,” Behiel said.

“I’m not downplaying the importance of any of the other industries we have in town, but a large portion of the industry and spinoff is a result of agriculture.”

Behiel proclaimed October as Agriculture Month for 2021 to recognize and raise awareness of the importance of agriculture to the community at September’s council meeting. Agriculture Month is proclaimed annually provincially by the Government of Saskatchewan.

Each October is proclaimed Agriculture Month by the Government of Saskatchewan across the province, but each municipality is left up to themselves.

“Humboldt was started as that whole reason, a group of farmers and settlers came out here to farm and take a look at the agricultural industry, so it’s keeping with the tradition of the original routes of Humboldt.”

As part of the proclamation, citizens of Humboldt are encouraged to celebrate the people along the agricultural value chain who deliver healthy, affordable and safer products in a sustainable manner.

“We greatly appreciate all you do for all of us,” Behiel said, directing a message for local producers. “We hope that you continue to be safe and continue to keep the agricultural world the centre of Saskatchewan.”
