“Afternoon high temperatures near 30°C are expected early this week, and will approach 35°C in some regions by mid-week,” the weather service said June 29. “Little to no reprieve from the heat is expected, as overnight lows will remain between 14°C and 17°C.”

The heat wave is expected persist at least through to the end of this week.

Environment Canada said extreme heat affects everyone. The risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, and people working or exercising outdoors.

Effects of heat illness include:

  • swelling
  • rash
  • cramps

“Heat stroke is a medical emergency. If you feel dizzy or disoriented seek medical attention. Call 911 or your local emergency number,” Environment Canada said. “If someone has a high temperature and is unconscious or confused or has stopped sweating. Cool the person right away.”

HealthLine 811 can be called for advice on health risks, symptoms and precautions associated with heat.
