HUMBOLDT — This year, 2021, is a reassessment year for property values across the province.
Because the city has not yet received its reassessment package from the Saskatchewan Assessment Management Agency, it is extending the deadline to have its assessment roll done from April 1 to June 30.
Joe Day, the city manager, said it’s not unusual for the city to extend the deadline for compilation of the assessment roll.
The last reassessment year was 2016. In that year, reassessments affected certain classes of properties more than others, resulting in major tax hikes for certain businesses. The city ended up splitting those businesses off in a separate tax category the next year to reduce the tax increase.
Councillor Rob Muench expressed concern about repeating a similar problem for this year.
“[We need] to make sure that when we get that information, we go through it with a fine tooth comb so that we know that if we need to make some adjustments to our millage rates and that type of thing, that we don't have an issue where certain sectors of our of our tax base are getting hit extra hard.â€
Day said the city is using preliminary information to look for where a change in tax policy could be needed to ensure stability in taxation and then bring that forward to council if necessary.
