NIPAWIN β€” Other than deliveries by MTN Disposal, the Boreal Area Regional Waste Authority Inc. (BARWA) has temporarily closed landfill closed access to household waste due to a fire on the site.

The cause of the fire, which began on June 15, is not known at this time. Nobody has been harmed as a result.

β€œIn all of the heat that we had and all the shards of glass that act just like magnifying glasses the potential for this to happen is always there,” said Rennie Harper, Nipawin’s mayor and BARWA chairperson. β€œWe’re going to get back to normal as quickly as we can.”

Regular household curbside pickup will continue as per normal.

Compost and yard waste, metals and recyclables will continue to be allowed as well as clean construction materials.

Everyone must stop at the gate for instruction prior to proceeding into the landfill. Barricades and signage will be in place and staff will provide direction.
