NIPAWIN β€” The Boreal Area Regional Waste Authority Inc. (BARWA) landfill is back to normal operations two days after a fire ignited in one of its cells.

The cause of the fire, which began on June 15, is not known at this time. Nobody has been harmed as a result.

β€œIn all of the heat that we had and all the shards of glass that act just like magnifying glasses the potential for this to happen is always there,” said Rennie Harper, Nipawin’s mayor and BARWA chair. β€œWe’re going to get back to normal as quickly as we can.”

As a result of the blaze, the landfill had closed access to household waste for the first couple days after the fire, but maintained other operations including accepting compost and yard waste, metals and recyclables as well as clean construction materials.

Visitors to the site were required to stop at the gate for instruction prior to proceeding into the landfill, and barricades and signage were in place with staff providing direction.
