Men walk in heels to fight domestic violence June 5 in Tisdale

Men across northeast will step into red high heels this June to raise awareness and funds in the fight against domestic violence.

TISDALE — North East Outreach and Support Services Inc. (NEOSS) is hosting the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event on June 5, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Tisdale Town Square.

The international men’s march raises awareness about domestic violence, sexual assault and gender-based violence. Men will walk in bright red high-heeled shoes provided by NEOSS to symbolize the struggle against these issues. More than 230 pairs of shoes will be available, and businesses, sports teams and individuals are encouraged to register.

Since 2013, NEOSS has organized the walk as both a fundraiser and a public awareness campaign. Participants may walk solo or in teams to collect pledges supporting NEOSS’s services, including a women’s safe shelter and personal violence counselling, it said in a NEOSS news release.

NEOSS board co-chair Andrea Stapes said, “Domestic violence is not just a personal issue; it’s a community issue. By coming together to raise awareness and support programs like North East Outreach and Support Services, we take a stand against abuse and show that we believe in a safer, more supportive future for everyone.”

The organization provided three reasons to support the event:

  • It helps raise awareness about domestic violence, a pervasive issue that affects individuals across all walks of life.
  • It funds essential programs that provide shelter, counselling and legal support to those escaping abusive situations.
  • It fosters a community of support, demonstrating that we stand together in fighting against domestic violence and supporting survivors.

Board co-chair Heather Turcotte added, “Walking a mile in her shoes is more than just a symbolic gesture; it’s about stepping into the shoes of someone who has faced unimaginable pain. It’s about showing empathy, understanding, and a commitment to creating lasting change for survivors of domestic violence.”

Saskatchewan has the highest rate of intimate partner homicide among the provinces, based on data from the 2021 . According to , the rate of intimate partner violence in Saskatchewan is more than double the national average, with 724 victims per 100,000 population, compared to the national rate of 344 per 100,000.

Women are also welcome to participate as supporters.

Riverside Co-op will host a barbecue, with proceeds benefiting NEOSS. Entertainment will be provided by a local band, and mascots and dignitaries will be present to show support.

“By supporting this event, we are sending a powerful message: Domestic violence is never acceptable, and we will do whatever it takes to support those affected. It’s a privilege to be part of this effort and make a tangible difference in our community,” said Joan Bear, NEOSS executive director.

NEOSS is a registered non-profit charity serving northeast Saskatchewan. Operations include the 16-21 bed Emergency Women’s Shelter, an eight bed Emergency Children’s Receiving Home and clinical and supportive counselling services by the Outreach Department.
