LLOYDMINSTER – RCMP dismantled a pipe bomb in the backyard of a home on 41 Street near 49 Ave on Thursday. RCMP say they got a report around 9:11 a.m. on June 12 about the object that the caller said looked like a pipe bomb.
Lloydminster RCMP cordoned off the area to ensure public safety and called the Alberta RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) to assist. Once Alberta RCMP EDU arrived on scene, they identified the object as a pipe bomb and dismantled it.
Police are now trying to determine where the pipe came from and aren’t certain if this was an isolated incident or if there are other pipe bombs in the area. The public is asked to remain vigilant, not approach any suspicious objects and to report to police if they find any.
“We understand that these situations can be stressful for members of the community and Albertans in general” said Cpl. Christopher Byford, Acting Operations Support NCO for the Lloydminster RCMP in a media release Thursday. “We are hard at work investigating the issue and getting the answers the public needs in order to ensure their safety.”
Lloydminster RCMP will continue to work with the Alberta RCMP EDU and has called in the Alberta RCMP Police Dog Services as well as Lloydminster RCMP General Investigation Section (GIS) to assist in the investigation.
