Man charged with manslaughter in death of another man

RM OF BRITTANIA - Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes have charged a man with manslaughter.

On April 3 at approximately 5 p.m., Maidstone RCMP received a report of an injured male at a residence in the RM of Brittania.

Officers responded and located a 68-year-old man, who was transported to hospital with serious injuries. He later died in hospital. His family was notified.

Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes, with assistance from North Battleford Forensic Identification Services, investigated the circumstances surrounding the man's death in collaboration with the Saskatchewan Coroners Service.

As a result of the continued investigation, Major Crimes arrested a man at the Edmonton Remand Centre.

On May 26, 19-year-old Trey Berland, from Onion Lake Cree Nation, was charged with one count of manslaughter.

He is next scheduled to appear in Lloydminster Provincial Court on June 23.

The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) is also investigating this incident, as the investigation determined Maidstone RCMP received a request to conduct a wellness check on the man at approximately 7 a.m. on April 3.

A physical check on the man was not completed. Saskatchewan RCMP is also conducting a separate internal investigation into this incident to determine adherence to policy and any associated conduct implications. Police say they are disclosing this as part of their ongoing commitment to transparency.

SIRT is aware of Trey Bertrand’s arrest and charge.
