Blast from the Past: Stamps, coins and jewellery stolen in area

Wilkie Multiple 4-H Club, 43 members who participated in cooking, sewing and/or knitting projects, held their Achievement Day. Kelly Swarbrick, president, was presented with a trophy “for general proficiency and service to the club.”

Clubs and organizations in Unity – Lions, Legion, Elks, CYO, Brownies and Guides, hockey association and the Cardinals – made a down payment on a 1968 bus which could accommodate 68 children or 48 adults.

Wilkie and Scott United Church congregations planned a joint celebration of the 50th anniversary of the United Church of Canada with church services at Scott Experimental Farm followed by a potluck and games.

20 years ago

Running for Rodeo Queen in Unity were Alicia McCubbing, Kim Lane, JanaLee Reiniger, Heather Beres, Cheyanne Birn, Raelee Jahner and Jesse Hill.

Peter Gartner was named Unity’s Citizen of the Year. The nomination mentioned his work on the Cardinals baseball team and Unity Miners hockey team executives, participation on the St. Peter’s church board, Unity Chamber of Commerce, Little Assembly dance club, Lions Club, Unity Wildlife Federation, etc., and just generally always being willing to lend a hand.

Women in Wilkie and area were asked to participate, whether they had had breast cancer or not, in a computerized Saskatchewan Breast Cancer Study by coming to the Wilkie Health Centre and completing a detailed survey.

Thieves broke into the Canada Post office in Unity, making off with stamps and coins. Three days later, Little Albert’s jewellery store in Macklin was also broken into and a large amount of jewellery was stolen.
