Jason Hanson was one of 15 volunteers who assisted four staff members of the Nature Conservancy of Canada to take inventory of different plant and insect species found on a preserved piece of land in Maymont Aug. 22. It was his second time taking part in one of the nature walks and, although he doesn’t know much about what to look for, he enjoyed the opportunity to get out of Saskatoon and enjoy the hike. The group walked through the property and marked down what species they found and where they were on the property. Doing the walks and having knowledge of what’s there helps them know how to better preserve the land. The NCC was happy to have the help of volunteers and, although some were still learning, more eyes meant a better chance they wouldn’t miss anything. Along with identifying the various species, they also keep an eye out for evidence of things like ATV trails, fences knocked down or trees cut down to ensure the area isn’t being tampered with.Photo by Sean Macey
