The North Battleford Lions Club has made a significant donation to Battlefords KidSport, which provides grants to remove financial barriers for children looking to register in sports, handing over a cheque for $8,800 Monday. Some of the funds came from donations made by people who use the service offered during the annual Operation Red Nose initiative. This was the fifth year for Operation Red Nose in the Battlefords, which was the first Saskatchewan community to launch the initiative. This year, said Lion Bill Bowman, North Battleford volunteers drove 249 vehicles home, and double that in numbers of people. There were 40 local volunteers, of which 11 were members of either the North Battleford Lions, the Bonaventure Lions or the Historic Battleford Lions Clubs. Nationally, this is the 30th year for Operation Red Nose, which is set up in over 100 communities in six provinces and volunteers have reached the one million mark, said Bowman. Across Saskatchewan, 16,000 rides home were provided over the holiday season. Volunteers must all have criminal record checks done, which the RCMP provides.
