Talent showcased at Dr. Brass' annual art walk

The Art Walk allows students in Grades 5 to 8 to display their creations as part of their participation in the Visual Arts Academy.

YORKTON — The Dr. Brass Visual Arts Academy held its annual Art Walk the evening of June 12, giving students the opportunity to showcase their creative works from throughout the year.

Kailee Trost, Visual Arts Academy teacher at Dr. Brass School, said the event highlights the variety of techniques and mediums students have explored.

"Tonight we have our annual art walk and sale, which is a showcase of the students' work throughout the entire year," said Trost, "we've got a bunch of different mixed media pieces. We do anything from graphite drawings to acrylic paintings, to water colour. We've done structures with toothpicks, spray paint, model magic. We use all sorts of mediums."

The Art Walk allows students in Grades 5 to 8 to display their creations as part of their participation in the Visual Arts Academy. Trost, who has taught the academy for two years, explained that students spend their afternoons immersed in artistic projects.

"From hands-on activities, skill-building projects to field trips—they get a little bit of everything," she said, noting an upcoming trip to the Mackenzie Art Gallery in Regina for a tour and studio sessions.

This year’s event also included an opportunity for students to sell their work, with each deciding whether to keep or price their pieces for sale.

"Earlier today we went through every single piece of art, and the students had to label whether they wanted to sell it or they wanted to keep it," said Trost, adding that students keep the proceeds from any sales.

With a range of artistic styles on display, Trost emphasized the talent of her students and their willingness to experiment with new mediums.

"All the students are super talented in mediums across the board," she said. "A lot of them are trying mediums for the first time, but everything has turned out really great."
