This is a post election 2025 response to a call from some that the Green Party is irrelevant and has no place in Canadian politics.  I’m going to share three reasons why this argument is misguided, why the Green Party is more relevant today than ever, and why it has little to do with our work for the environment!

One, we’re the ONLY party who is committed to values that will fundamentally shift the way the government operates in this country.  Our stance on electoral reform is broad and deep encompassing not only our voting system, but how parties and candidates are funded, and the way elected representatives will work together once elected.  Our current system doesn’t work for us, and the Green Party is the only party calling for a complete reform of it.

Two, we’re the only party who is committed to income equality.  We have been sounding the alarm about oligarchs and big business controlling our government for years, putting more money in their pockets through government manipulation than in the pockets of the millions of working Canadians who are helping those corporations amass their fortunes.  Sweeping tax reforms, closing loopholes, and making billionaires pay their fair share would allow the government to support programs that would eliminate poverty, homelessness and affordability issues.  The Green Party is the ONLY party who does not take corporate donations through registered third party fundraising, so we are the ONLY party not beholden to big business. Our MP’s work for their riding first, free to make decisions that best support people and the planet, not corporate bottom lines.

Three, we’re the only party that is connected with other Greens around the globe all working towards the same goals; to protect people and the planet, heal the divides bringing humanity together, and standing up for the rights of all species to live and thrive.  Being part of a global network of people who are interconnected and interdependent is imperative for all our futures. We are working towards something far bigger than our local interests, and individual personal well-being, we’re working for global peace.

So you see, Greens are not irrelevant, quite the opposite actually, we’re so far ahead and progressive it’s hard sometimes to grasp just how relevant we are.
