Well, it’s a new day in Canada and pot smokers are rejoicing (not to mention pot sellers,) And for those of you not knowing what I’m talking about, where have you been hiding?
I, myself, am indifferent to the choices made by individuals. As long as those choices don’t affect my rights.
So, smoke if you want; on your own private property. But I don’t want to smell it. Gosh, we ask folks not to wear perfume to medical centres or the workplace, but now it’s okay to be in public with the stench of marijuana wafting from your winter woollies. (And, yes, it stinks.)
Smoke it if you must; it’s your legal right. But I don’t want you getting behind the wheel of a car, truck, snowmobile or dog sled if you’ve been toking up. Isn’t it enough that we have to watch for drunk drivers and cell phone users, now we’re adding another group of less-than-attentive drivers on the road. (And, yes, two or three wrongs certainly don’t make a right.)
Smoke if you please; it’s the new norm. But I don’t want you to flout the law and cause a disturbance. Don’t our police officers have enough to deal with? They don’t need some bored individuals testing the waters to see how much they can get away with. (And, yes, you can bet your bottom dollar that there are folks just itching to push the limits.)
Smoke if you decide; it’s your life. But I don’t want to have my life affected by your choices. I think that’s only fair. (But I’m having a hard time believing it won’t be.)
It will be an interesting learning curve over the next few weeks. Hopefully folks will act responsibly. But if cell phone usage while driving, and drinking and driving are any indication, I won’t be holding my breath in anticipation. (Except when I’m in the vicinity of those smoking pot.)
