The Wet Secrets- I Can Live Forever EP
Since the announcement that the Edmonton Indie Scene darlings The Wet Secrets signed a contract with Six Shooter Records, I have been anxiously waiting to hear new material. The wait is over.
The only disappointment is the release comes in the form of an EP consisting of four new songs. Ok, now I have to wait again for the new full length release this spring. Tick tock, tick tock.
For those who have not heard of this band, first, why not? Second, they are rock 鈥榥 roll dance band from Edmonton. I describe their sound as a high school concert band that鈥檚 gone totally out of control and results in the band leader throwing up his/her hands and vacating the room in horror.
Ok let鈥檚 get to the EP. It opens with a real 鈥渉it鈥�, 鈥淚 Can Swing A Hammer鈥�. I鈥檝e seen them perform this tune live recently and the recorded version brilliantly captures the true live sound. That is what impresses me most about the band, is in the way they reproduce their high energy live act onto vinyl.
The leader of the band, Lyle Bell, plays the meanest distorted bass reminiscent of the late Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead.聽 This sound features prominently in 鈥淚f I Was A Camera鈥�, and along with the line 鈥淭ake off your clothes鈥�, had me hooked on first listen.
鈥淔inal Curtain For A Drama Queen shows off the bands wicked sense of humour and the keyboard wizardry of Paul Arusch. This is the song I can鈥檛 get out of my head. Make it stop! Please make it stop! Wait, don鈥檛 you dare.
The final song 鈥淨uell Surprise鈥� is the epitome of The Wet Secrets. They pull out the full arsenal here. The steady drone of Bell鈥檚 bass, the steady drums of Trevor Anderson, the backing vocals and horn section of Kim Rackel, Emma Frazier and Christian Maslyk is a perfect ending to an EP that left me wanting more from this high energy, most original, organized rock 鈥榥 roll confusion, band.
Okay, now I鈥檓 going back to my waiting. Leave me alone.
