Lack of interest reason for choir cut

Dear Editor: Each spring, students at the YRHS are given the opportunity to make course selections for the upcoming school year based upon their interest and more often than not, their requirements for post-secondary programs.

Dear Editor:

Each spring, students at the YRHS are given the opportunity to make course selections for the upcoming school year based upon their interest and more often than not, their requirements for post-secondary programs. Based upon these student selections, the in-school administration team is tasked with creating a timetable which includes appropriate numbers of class sections to accommodate the selection requests.  The YRHS would have a set number of teachers allocated to their staff to deliver the courses being offered within a given school year.

Each year, the courses offered as well as the number of course sections fluctuates. This fluctuation is due to student interest as demonstrated within the course selection process. If in any given year the interest level or student numbers do not warrant offering a course, that course is not offered for that particular year. It would continue to appear as a student option for future years and based on interest and selection could once again be offered if the numbers support it.  This would be a practice common to high schools within and outside of GSSD.

In-school administrators are constantly faced with difficult programming decisions. They are required be good stewards of the professional personnel allotted to their school by offering programming reflective of student interest and student choice. The decision to suspend programming for choir resulted from a lack of student interest. The YRHS will continue to offer extra-curricular opportunities within the Music Department but for the current year will not be offering Choir as a credit course.
