Welcome to Week CLXXXVII of ‘Fishing Parkland Shorelines’. Like most of us I am a novice fisherman, loving to fish, but far from an expert. In the following weeks I’ll attempt to give those anglers who love to fish but just don’t have access to a boat, a look at some of the options in the Yorkton area where you can fish from shore, and hopefully catch some fish.
So it’s the week of seasonal holidays for many.
School’s out, and with luck the young ones are still amusing themselves with whatever Santa brought them (and your credit card was mysteriously billed for).
You on the other hand have quite enough already of trying to figure out how the new-fangled waffle iron works, or you’ve had enough of trying on the six pairs or exactly matching pairs of socks.
So what to do in the vacuum of post-Christmas tinsel, and buy the perfect gift ads?
You could brave the crush of a Boxing Day Sale, but there is only so much red a person can suffer on the season, Santa’s suit notwithstanding. As it is the chances of that new rod and reel by the time the next season starts is unlikely, given the number of zeroes already on the old credit card.
Perhaps the answer is simple, pour yourself a large glass of egg nog, spiced as you see fit, and take some time to peruse the Internet in search of some fine fishing videos.
There are few activities which work better on film than fishing.
The great outdoors is a stunning set to begin with.
The fight of a fish on the line is a time of drama.
The smile of a fisherman, the great close up.
The film basically comes together simply by being there.
Yes I am sure there is more to the technical side of things, but it is a case where raw footage will give filmmakers lot’s to work with.
In your search for a few films to watch, there is a site crammed full of fine offerings, most of them of the short variety, which is ideal as you can sneak a couple between a leftover turkey sandwich, the World Junior Hockey game of the day, and a nap.
The site is www.flydreamers.com
It is a spot on the Internet where you really can get lost in fishing trips all over the planet.
For example, check out Limay by Todd Moen - Limay River Argentina Fly Fishing.
I mention this one because Todd Moen has a long list of fine fishing films to his credit, and long-time readers might recall an interview I did with his in regards to the excellent ezine ‘Catch Magazine’ some time ago.
I mentioned around the world fishing. Check out Fly Fishing in Iceland. It’s just more than five-minutes, but it’s pretty darned fun too.
Tiger fish by the same people takes you to the Zambezi River, in Mozambique.
Or there is Fly Fishing New Zealand - Can’t Run.....Can’t Hide.
At just three-minutes-plus Another Creek Cracker - Hooking into a nice Brown Trout on the dry fly in a small creek is amazing too. That a small water like the one being fished as big trout like that one caught is pretty incredible, at least from a Saskatchewan perspective where small creeks are rarely home to fish.
Check it out folks.
And yes, I know this is a short offering this week, but you see I still may have a few presents to buy, and there is egg nog still in the carton, so you’ll excuse me a few words I am sure.
But I do wish you all a Happy Holidays, and may dreams of big fish dance in your heads always.
