Dear Editor:
I read the article on the “Redneck Riot Coyote Derby” with a mixture of surprise, disgust and sadness. I was surprised your paper would publish such an odious article.
Think of the message it sends to readers afar- “Did you know what people in east-central Saskatchewan like to do for entertainment? They get together to kill something and have chili on a bun and a beer afterward!” Disgust that people here still adhere to the eighteen century nonsense that apex predators were inherently evil and should be slaughtered at every opportunity rather than understanding that these creatures are essential for a healthy ecosystem. Sadness at the sight of the horrific images you chose to accompany the article.
Mr. Chabun, rather than donating the proceeds of your senseless slaughter to a “yet to be chosen charity”, think about investing in a camera and hosting a photo competition next year. You might learn to appreciate coyotes for the intelligent, complex, beautiful and essential creatures they are.
