The Canora Composite School senior girls basketball team finished a tremendous season with a record of 22 wins and only five losses, according to coach Curtis Baillie.
When the conference playoffs started on March 10 there were 54 2A schools all vying for the provincial championship. The Canora girls attended the conference tournament where they won the championship by edging out Creighton in a thrilling game that came down to the last minute, said Baillie.
After the conference tournaments were completed, the remaining 16 teams in contention for the provincial championship were ranked. The Canora girls were ranked fourth and hosted a 2A regional tournament on March 17 and 18.
In a semifinal game, Canora met Rosthern Junior College in an exciting affair with multiple lead changes, said Baillie. Canora prevailed by a score of 73-62, thereby advancing to the regional final.
In the final game Canora met the fifth-ranked team from Foam Lake. Foam Lake played relentless defence the whole game and came out victorious in a hard fought contest by a score of 74-66, and advanced to provincials in Regina, also known as HOOPLA.
All in all, Canora won four tournaments and also grabbed a second and a third place finish in other tournaments this season. This gives them plenty of motivation to look forward to next year, said Baillie.
