The Learn to Skate program started in Kamsack at the Broda Sportsplex on January 11. With instructor Jenna Bowes of Kamsack, there is two half-hour sessions held every Monday, starting at 4 p.m., for the duration of 11 weeks.

The first group of 11 registered skaters is the beginner group who has had little or no previous skating experience, Bowes explained during the session on February 6. The skaters鈥 ages range from six to nine years.

鈥淲ith this group I usually lead them with drills to promote balance on the ice, but I also use different props like the plastic buckets and some toys,鈥 said Bowes. 鈥淲e play fun games to make learning more exciting for the skaters. They are making really good progress.鈥

The second group of 10 registered skaters is of the more advanced students.

鈥淪ome of the skaters in this class are already in hockey but their parents want to see them improve their skating skills,鈥 she said. 鈥淲e mostly do drills to improve balance and learn stopping techniques. We also do power skating. I have seen a big improvement in this group.鈥

Among the drills being practiced right now with this group are 鈥渉ow far can you glide鈥 and 鈥渇ull snow plow stop,鈥 said Bowes.
