Restrictions on tarp-covered structures and solid waste management and landfill site services were among the items of concern to town council at its regular meetings on May 15 and June 5.

At the May 15 meeting, Gord Kaye met with council to discuss his opposition to a complete ban on tarp-covered structures. Council agreed to restrict the placement of tarp structures and prohibit the placement of sea containers within residential districts, effective immediately and that the chief administrative officer be authorized to make the required bylaw changes.

Amanda Bushell met with council to discuss her concerns regarding traffic speed on Mary Street.

Tricia Bedore met with council to request a change to the zoning bylaw requirements for signage in a residential district.

Council agreed to apply for New Deal funding for a portion of the 2018 Street paving project and  agreed with the terms and conditions of this program, and will manage the completion of the project and fund the municipal share of the costs.

Council agreed to refund $4,725 to Shawn Stefanowich for the purchase of a vacant lot on Korbin Avenue in Canora.

Council agreed to hire Ben Sipple as interim community development officer for the duration of Brandi Zavislak’s maternity leave, effective May 28.

A bylaw to provide for incurring a long-term debt was introduced, read three times and adopted.

At the June 5 meeting, Nicholas Huyter of Tetra Tech Canada Inc. met with council to discuss solid waste management and landfill site services. Council accepted the proposal of Tetra Tech Canada Inc. to provide an environmental site assessment and corrective action plan for Town of Canora landfill at the estimated cost of just over $39,000.                                                                                                                     

Council suspended its regular meeting and opened a public hearing regarding the discretionary use of a home business at 145 Centre Avenue East. Written representations regarding the application were received from Russell Bartko, Tyler Tratch, Russell and Irene Andrusyk, Patricia Holowatiuk, Donald Pantuik and Joanne Bennett. Council closed the public hearing and resumed the regular council meeting. Council denied the discretionary use of a home business at 145 Centre Avenue east.

Council suspended its regular meeting and opened a public hearing regarding the discretionary use of a craft and art shop at 418 Norway Road. David Pinkerton, Debra Pinkerton, Ralph Jarotski and Catherine Jarotski all attended and made representation regarding the application.

Council closed the public hearing and resumed the regular council meeting. Council denied the discretionary use of a craft and art shop at 418 Norway Road.

Council terminated the lease agreement with Matt Hrynkiw for 241 Railway Avenue, effective immediately, and agreed to provide notice as required.                                                                                                            Council accepted Wyonzek Bros. tendered bid of $13,750 plus taxes for the demolition of the building at 241 Railway Avenue.

Council agreed to write off approximately $434 in water usage charges on the April utility billing for Beverly Kopeck at 114 Canora Avenue.

Council agreed to table the request of Dan Popoff for an adjustment to the May utility billing for 127 Sixth Avenue East.

Council tabled the request of Gail Kossowan to amend an Animal Control Bylaw to allow the keeping of livestock at 251 Whitesand Drive.                                                                                                                       

Council tabled the request of Tricia Bedore on behalf of Kids Korner Youth Centre to amend the Zoning Bylaw regarding signage in a residential district.

Council approved the request of Tony Ripa to cut hay on NE and NW 16-32-3 W2 for $450 in 2018.

A bylaw to enter into a farm land lease agreement was introduced, read three times and adopted.     

Council agreed to cancel its July 3 regular meeting.
