A snowmobile safety training course held at the Canora Golf Course clubhouse on January 27 had an enrollment of 14 participants.

The course was open to ages 12 and up, and is required by the Saskatchewan Snowmobile Association for a rider to be certified to operate a snowmobile on public land.    Snowmobiling has become a hugely popular family sport, said Jerry Jemieff of Yorkton, safety instructor for the course.

The course provides a solid background in snowmobile safety, said Jemieff. Students are required to learn the proper hand signals, as well as the signs found on snowmobile trails.

They are encouraged to stay on groomed snowmobile trails as much as possible. But if they decide to ride where there are no trails, the course reminds them of the importance of being on the lookout for obstacles and obstructions such as barbed wire, culverts and fence posts.

Overall, the riders are encouraged to use good common sense, said Jemieff.

He and other course instructors have a minimum of five years of snowmobiling experience, and are funded and secured by the Saskatchewan Snowmobile Association.
