Shanna Lippert took turns with her father Lloyd Smith of Pelly, providing sleigh rides to riders of all ages, which started out from the Canora Visitor’s Centre/CN museum on November 27.

In what was described by organizers as a very successful kick-off for Canora’s Winter Lights Festival, Canora residents took full advantage of the sleigh rides offered on November 27, going for a total of 36 rides over three hours.

Before heading out on rides from the Visitor Centre/CN Museum, young and old alike received a warm welcome from Santa and Mrs. Claus and their two elves.

Lloyd Smith of Pelly supplied the sleigh and the horses, a pair of Percheron full brothers named Tom (12 years old) and Jiggs (11 years old). Splitting the driving duties with Smith for the evening was his daughter Shanna Lippert.

The horses are equipped with modified shoes which give them better traction on ice and snow during the winter season, said Smith.

Smith estimates he’s been giving sleigh rides at this time of year for approximately 20 years, and really enjoys seeing people have a good time on the ride. He and his Percherons usually make it to five events per year during the Christmas season, which normally includes visits to Canora, Kamsack, Sturgis, Norquay and Pelly.
