A Common Thread is a Canora needlework group which is committed to making one quilt per year as a donation to support worthwhile projects.聽
The group鈥檚 most recent quilt was put together by members between October and December, and then quilted by Renee Langan, a group member, in January, said Oney Pollock, president. Karen Kraynick, a group member, made a pillow from material left over from the quilt.
The recipient of the group鈥檚 quilt for 2018 is the Canora Hospital Auxiliary. In past years, quilts have been donated to Gateway Lodge and The Health Foundation. The quilts usually raise a few hundred dollars each, said Pollock.
Pollock said A Common Thread currently has 11 members, and has been meeting for five or six years.
鈥淢ost of us are quilters, but we welcome those with other needlecraft skills as well,鈥 she said.聽 We meet weekly in the basement of The United Church in Canora. We enjoy sharing ideas for projects and visiting as we work.鈥
When not busy with a fundraising quilt, group members work on their own projects and share ideas. Newcomers at all skill levels are always welcome.
Pollock said the group tries to offer classes on a regular basis to learn new techniques.
鈥淭his year we鈥檝e had two classes. Shirley Kelly from Shirley鈥檚 Sewing Room in Moosomin offered us a class in February on modern Dresden quilts, which are a type of patterned quilts. On March 9 and 10 we did a class on collage quilts with Wendy van der Walt from Fabriculous in Swan River. Class days were busy! We had participants from Buchanan, Danbury, Yorkton, Regina and Snow Lake, Man., as well as our own members.鈥
The group is already planning another busy year with some new classes for next fall.
Pollock said group members are grateful for support received through Sask Lotteries, administered by Leisure Services of Canora.
Current members of A Common Thread are: Janet Hill, Doris Kopelchuk, Julie Kraynick, Karen Kraynick, Diana Smorodin, Renee Langan, Gladys Tomski, Jopie Lavrusen, Carolle Pasiechnik, Betty Waugh and Oney Pollock.
