Update: Second victim of disturbance in Saskatoon dies

A 20-year-old Saskatoon man has now been charged with two murders

Two woman have died of injuries sustained in a disturbance, says Saskatoon Police Service.

SASKATOON — Update Jan. 21: The second victim related to the homicide that took place Wednesday, January 19th has succumbed to his injuries.  Phoenix Checkosis, 21 of Saskatoon died in hospital Thursday.  Kira Opoonechaw, 19, also of Saskatoon, died of her injuries on Wednesday.

A 20-year-old man, initially charged with second degree murder and attempted murder, will be charged with a second count of second degree murder. He remains in custody.

At 1:40 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 19, police responded to a report of an injured person in the 400 block of Ave. B N. When officers arrived they found two victims, a 21-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman suffering from stab wounds. Both were transported to hospital. The woman succumbed to her injuries. The man remains in critical condition.

The suspect was arrested a short distance from the scene. He has been charged with both second-degree murder and attempted murder. He will be appearing in Saskatoon Provincial Court on Thursday morning.

The victims and the suspect were known to each other. At the request of the family, the name of the victim is not being released at this time.
