For a third year running Yorkton Regional High School鈥檚 mock trial team are provincial champions.
The annual competition hosted by the Saskatchewan Branch of the Canadian Bar Association pits high school law clubs against each other in a courtroom setting.
The competition took place April 18 at Court of Queen鈥檚 Bench in Saskatoon.
Students argued a fictional murder case Regina v. Brogue before two actual Queen鈥檚 Bench justices and two provincial court judges who acted as adjudicators.
Tara Haugen, the YRHS coach said the kids in the law club are extremely dedicated and put in many hours and hard work to prepare.
鈥淲e are super-proud of these kids,鈥� she said.
鈥淭hey were great ambassadors of the school. They represented the school in amazing fashion.鈥�
Haugen explained that while some kids in the club come from the school鈥檚 introductory law class, the club and the competition is a completely separate extra-curricular activity.
The competition is part of Law Day, which seeks to raise awareness of justice issues.
鈥淭he mock trial is an educational exercise, as well as a competition,鈥� stated a bar association press release.
鈥淚t is an opportunity for the legal profession to promote public awareness of the legal system and an opportunity for students to get hands-on experience about the court process, learn more about the application of the law and gain some awareness about legal practice.鈥�
