A collision between two semi-trailers October 21 closed down Hwy 10 in both directions just south of Yorkton for more than five hours.
Both vehicles were southbound at the time of the crash. Cpl. Tim Schwartz of the Yorkton rural RCMP said the initial investigation suggests the driver of the lead truck, who was hauling dual tankers of anhydrous ammonia, appeared to the second driver to be pulling over to the shoulder, but then pulled out into the oncoming lane as if to make a left-hand turn onto a side road.
The passenger side of the second semi, which was loaded with lumber slammed into the driver's side of the first.
Initial fears of an ammonia breach were quickly allayed as neither tank was compromised in any way, Schwartz said.
Both drivers were injured and transported to the Yorkton Regional Health Centre. The driver of the lead truck is still in hospital with undisclosed injuries.
The driver of the second truck was treated and released shortly afterward.
Schwartz said the delay in reopening the highway was three-fold.
First, there is no tow truck in the immediate area that can handle semi trailers so authorities had to send for one out of Whitewood.
Also, there was an inordinate amount of debris from the collision that had to be cleared.
Finally, although ammonia was not a problem, there was concern about other vehicular fluids. The lead truck spilled its engine fluids and the second truck, which landed in the ditch and was leaking gas from its fuel tanks. Sask Environment is currently conducting an environmental assessment.
The police investigation is ongoing and no charges have yet been laid. Schwartz said there was no alcohol or drugs involved.
