A prescribed burn in Good Spirit Lake Provincial Park is scheduled to begin today.
This is the second step in a series of successive treatments over the next three to five years that will be applied to the core areas of the park.
Prescribed burns follow nature’s method of rejuvenating an area through the use of fire. The goal of this project is to reduce dangerous fuel loads and restore the ecological health in the core areas of the park, important for both the public safety and ecosystem.
The burn unit is approximately 52 hectares in size and it is anticipated to take four days to complete the burn. Trained personnel from the ministries of Parks, Culture and Sport; Environment; and Government Relations Emergency Management and Fire Safety will conduct the burns.
Necessary precautions have been taken to ensure public safety and protection of adjacent lands and property.
