Yorkton Council was unanimous in passing an exemption to the City鈥檚 Noise Bylaw after a request was made on behalf of the local Relay for Life.
鈥淭he Parkland Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society is hosting a Relay for Life event on the football field and walking track at Century Field. This event starts at 7:00 p.m. Friday, June 19, and goes through the night until 7:00 a.m. Saturday, June 20,鈥� explained local committee chair Scott Sharpe to Council at their regular meeting Monday.
鈥淩elay for Life is a 12 hour event that gives participants the opportunity to celebrate cancer survivors and honour and remember loved ones, and it鈥檚 a way for each of us to fight back against cancer. It鈥檚 a night of friendship, emotion, community, entertainment and fundraising. This unique and inspiring event is a night for all ages.鈥�
The event is well attended, for a good cause, said Sharpe.
鈥淲e will have between 22 and 26 teams of eight to 20 participants who have been collecting pledges and raising money for the Canadian Cancer Society鈥檚 work. The actual relay involves at least one participant from each team being on the 鈥渢rack鈥� as we walk through the night to symbolize that cancer never sleeps and into the morning as daylight overtakes the dark,鈥� he said.
鈥淒uring the night we have a number of special ceremonies as well as ongoing activities and music to keep the participants inspired as they walk.鈥�
