National Wildlife Week

The Government of Saskatchewan joins the Canadian Wildlife Federation to recognize April 10 to 16 as National Wildlife Week.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Migratory Birds Convention between Canada and the United States, which was the first international treaty to conserve wildlife. This year鈥檚 National Wildlife Week theme is Giving Wings to Wildlife Conservation. The focus is on creating awareness for all wild winged creatures, from birds and bees to bats and butterflies.

鈥淪askatchewan is pleased to celebrate this anniversary of National Wildlife Week,鈥 Environment Minister Herb Cox said.聽 鈥淥ur province supports international conservation initiatives such as the North American Waterfowl Management Plan and the North American Wetlands Conservation Act, which help to provide habitat in Saskatchewan for the continent鈥檚 migrating and breeding birds.鈥

The ministry鈥檚 Fish and Wildlife Development Fund earmarks funds from the purchase of hunting, angling and trapping licences to conserve wildlife habitat in partnership with the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation, Ducks Unlimited Canada and Nature Conservancy Canada. The fund also supports important wildlife research and education in Saskatchewan.

The Canadian Wildlife Federation launched National Wildlife Week in 1947 to celebrate our country鈥檚 natural heritage and promote the importance of its conservation. The spirit of National Wildlife Week aligns with the Ministry of Environment鈥檚 dedication to the protection, preservation and management of Saskatchewan鈥檚 wildlife and natural habitats.
