Sheila Hryniuk鈥檚 recent visit to her alma mater resulted in a fresh piece of hardware for her trophy case.
Hryniuk, Executive Director with Parkland Valley Sport, Culture, and Recreation District, received the Distinguished Alumni award from the University of Regina (U of R) in mid-April.
鈥淚t felt really good,鈥 she said. 鈥淩eally humbling.鈥
Hryniuk studied kinesiology at U of R, graduating in 1997. She鈥檚 dedicated herself to promoting healthy living, which caught the eye of Saskatchewan In Motion (SIM).
SIM nominated Hryniuk for the award. It is the first time the group has nominated an individual for such a honour.
鈥淪heila really stood out in making a contribution to her community,鈥 said Cathie Kryzanowski, Executive Director with SIM. 鈥淸She] has been a strong champion for active forms of transportation.鈥
Hryniuk delivered a keynote address for a U of R graduating class. She discussed her career and the importance of physical activity, highlighting how technology makes sedentary lifestyles more attractive.
鈥淭he challenge ahead is how we can make movement valued,鈥 she said.
Hryniuk will promote her message of physical recreation at an upcoming conference in Regina on May 8-10.
