On June 7, the final day of the University of Regina鈥檚 2019 Spring Convocation, Gordon and Jill Rawlinson will be presented with Honorary Doctor of Laws honoris causa (LLD) the highest honour the University can grant.
The doctorates were awarded in recognition of the Rawlinson鈥檚 generous philanthropy and commitment to giving back to the province and people of Saskatchewan.
鈥淲e are honoured to be receiving this recognition from the University of Regina,鈥� said Jill Rawlinson, chair of the Lily Street Foundation (the Rawlinson family charitable foundation) that is the primary vehicle for their philanthropy.
鈥淕rowing up on a farm in Saskatchewan made me realize and appreciate the importance of a strong family and a strong community," said Jill Rawlinson. 鈥淭here鈥檚 a huge interdependence, supporting one another is just what you do.鈥�
In 1969 Gordon Rawlinson took over managing Rawlco Radio, the company started by his father E. A. Rawlinson in 1946. Gordon became the owner and CEO in 1974 and has expanded the company to include radio stations in Regina, Saskatoon and Calgary.
鈥淢y father used to say, 鈥楾he better you serve the community, the better your business will do,鈥欌�� Gordon recalls. 鈥淚 have taken this advice to heart and believe it is the foundation of our success.鈥�
Health care, the arts, education and Indigenous entrepreneurs are just some of the many beneficiaries of the Rawlinson鈥檚 philanthropy in Saskatchewan.
Gordon, a Member of the Order of Canada and the Saskatchewan Order of Merit also serves on the Dean鈥檚 Advisory Council at the Edwards School of Business, University of Saskatchewan.
