Ladies from all walks of life gathered at the SIGN building on Broadway Street last Sunday to celebrate women鈥檚 contributions and learn self-care techniques.

They participated in the Everyday Heroes event, which honoured women鈥檚 hard work in their families and communities.

鈥淲e certainly appreciate you taking the time out of your busy schedules to attend today鈥檚 first-of-its-kind event in our city,鈥 City Councillor Randy Goulden told the capacity crowd. 鈥淲e are here today to celebrate all women, as we are the everyday heroes in the lives of the many people around us.鈥

The day-long event offered women a chance to learn about the wide variety of health and living services available in Yorkton.

鈥淲e find that people don鈥檛 often realize all that Yorkton has to offer,鈥 Goulden said. 鈥淸They鈥檙e] missing out on some great services...to maintain and, ideally, improve their health.鈥
A panel of speakers from a vast array of health and wellness professions delivered speeches about nutrition and body maintenance.

Topics included honey, sleep, martial arts, acupuncture, and massage therapy.

鈥淲omen take care of people and often forget to take care of themselves,鈥 Goulden said. 鈥淭his event...gives [you] some 鈥榤e time鈥 where you can educate and empower yourself.鈥

Wendy Nesseth, a health advocate, was a speaker at the event. She discussed the power and benefits of essential oils and yoga.

鈥淚n our Bible, there鈥檚 over 600 references to essential oils,鈥 she said. 鈥淵oga predates all organized religions, so it鈥檚 an ancient practice as well.

鈥淲hen we bring these two [elements] together, it can be very powerful.鈥

Nesseth handed out samples of essential oils and led the crowd through a brief yoga session.

鈥淎s we age, we lose flexibility,鈥 she said. 鈥淲hen we do stuff to maintain [our body], it can be very beneficial.鈥

Women at the event had a chance to ask the speakers questions and interact with their fellow attendees.

鈥淪trong women, strong families, strong communities; it all starts with us,鈥 Goulden said. 鈥淭he everyday heroes.

A follow-up event will be held in Yorkton this September.
