Councillor Quinn Haider loves playing a wrestling villain.
Haider, the principal at St. Paul鈥檚 School, has been telling his students he鈥檒l do whatever it takes to win his big match this Friday. He鈥檚 all too happy to tell his opponent, fellow councillor Darcy Zaharia, that he鈥檒l be walking home with a bald head. Haider鈥檚 having a blast being bad.
鈥淚鈥檝e had a lot of fun at my school telling the kids that I鈥檓 going to be the bad guy,鈥 he said.
Haider has been a lifelong professional wrestling fan. He enjoys the larger-than-life characters and the electric personalities such as Chris Jericho and The Rock.
鈥淢y favourites have always been the dynamic speakers,鈥 he said.
On Oct. 26, Haider and Zaharia will live out their wrestling dreams as they put their hair on the line for a good cause.
This Friday, Canadian Wrestling Elite (CWE) is returning to Yorkton as part of its 鈥淪trutting and Cutting鈥 tour. Haider and Zaharia are part of one of the main attractions: A hair vs. hair match.
鈥淒arcy is going to lose his hair,鈥 Haider said. 鈥淸I鈥檓] 100 per cent confident.鈥
鈥淚 like my chances,鈥 Zaharia countered.
Haider and Zaharia won鈥檛 actually be lacing up their boots and battling in the squared circle; instead, they鈥檒l be managing tag teams. Haider will be managing聽 鈥淭he Crazed Cowboy鈥 Jacob Creed聽 and 鈥淭he Boston Bruiser鈥 Kevin O鈥橠oyle, while Zaharia will be in the corner of Bull Bodnar and Kevin Lee Davidson. The manager of the losing team will have their head shaved bald.
Zaharia wants his team to fight fair while Haider is ready to cheat to secure victory.
鈥淚鈥檓 going to do whatever it takes to win this match,鈥 he said.
The match is raising money for a good cause. Haider and Zaharia have promoted the bout by fundraising for Close Cuts for Cancer. So far they鈥檝e collected over $1100.
鈥淲e鈥檝e met our goal and then some,鈥 Haider said.
The loser鈥檚 head will be in good hands, as wrestling legend Brutus 鈥渢he Barber鈥 Beefcake will be personally shaving them.
鈥淲hen I was a young man, Brutus made his living in the WWE by shaving his opponents鈥 hair,鈥 Haider said.
Beefcake (real name Edward Leslie) has wrestled for several companies under dozens of personas in his 40-year career, but he loves playing the Barber.
鈥淭here鈥檚 nothing better than chopping off somebody鈥檚 hair,鈥 he said. 鈥淭he fans love it.鈥
Beefcake has shaved countless people鈥檚 heads over the years. He aims to keep things light and safe.
鈥淣o one鈥檚 ever been injured [while I shave them],鈥 he said. 鈥淚 pride myself on that fact.鈥
CWE general manager Danny Warren reached out to Beefcake to join the tour, the biggest in company history. They鈥檙e putting on 32 shows in 32 days, visiting Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia. Warren knows it鈥檒l be a demanding tour for his crew, but he thinks they鈥檙e up for the challenge.
鈥淲e want to keep expanding,鈥 he said.
Beefcake is looking forward to hitting the road and meeting his Canadian fans.
鈥淚t鈥檚 relaxing,鈥 he said. 鈥淎irports are a hassle.鈥
Haider is thrilled to be a part of the show.
鈥淸CWE] is great family fun,鈥 he said.
