One of the suspects in a theft of two classic cars near Yorkton last fall has pleaded guilty.
Jessica Ann Kopan, 20, appeared in Yorkton Provincial Court February 2 on one count of break, enter and theft over $5,000. The judge adjourned sentencing until March 4.
Between September 9 and 16, 2014, a 1976 Dodge Dart and a 1969 Pontiac Firebird went missing from a storage Quonset located about 22 kilometres southwest of Yorkton.
A trail camera captured three suspects breaking in and initially taking pictures of the cars. They later returned with a dually truck and flatbed trailer and removed the antiques.
On September 19, the RCMP recovered the Firebird from a Quonset off York Road in an industrial area of Yorkton. The next day they found the Dart at an abandoned farm north of Grenfell.
Four days later, police arrested Kopan and Darwin Blaze Mogenson of Watrous and put out a warrant for Blain Gilbert Gaudet of Melville. All three were charged with break, enter and theft over $5,000 while Mogenson and Gaudet faced additional charges of trafficking stolen property and breach of an undertaking.
Mogenson’s case was waived to Saskatoon where he faces dozens of other similar charges. He is scheduled to appear in Saskatoon Provincial Court February 19.
Gaudet appeared in Yorkton Court Monday and pleaded not guilty to all charges. The Crown is proceeding by indictment on the break, enter and theft count.
Local attorney Fred Fisher, acting as agent for defence counsel Greg Wilson, asked for an August date for a preliminary hearing on the indictable charge and trial on his other charges. Those hearings are now scheduled for August 5.
