Kamsack Fire Department welcomes rain, call-outs steady

Kamsack's Fire Chief says while fire bans are lifted as a result of recent rain, dead grass can still easily contribute to potential fires.

KAMSACK —The Kamsack Fire Department continues to be busy with calls.

Kamsack’s Fire Chief reportsed that on April 19, they responded to two motor-vehicle accident calls and a grass fire on Cote First Nation. The following day, April 20, the department responded to a fire along the CN tracks in Kamsack. And on May 21, a pile of railway ties across from the fire hall incurred a fire.

The division of protective services for Kamsack, responded to an accident south of Kamsack on Highway 8 on April 22. On April 30, the team was called to a large grass and bush fire at Cote First Nation.

For May, the fire chief adds, “We responded to a May 3 grass/bush fire north of the golf course in Kamsack. On May 6, we responded to a grass fire on Cote First Nation, and May 8, a field fire on Cote First Nation.”

May 9, the KFD responded to a large grass fire about 10 kilometres south of Veregin as a mutual aid call with the Rhein Fire Department.

May 10, firefighters responded to a trash fire south of Kamsack. There was a large bush fire on Cote First Nation that Kamsack fire crew also responded to.

“We welcomed the much-needed rain. Fire bans for the town and the RM of Cote were lifted. Even though the bans are lifted please be careful as there is still a lot of dead grass around the area and fires are still possible,” added the Kamsack fire chief.

A member of Kamsack RCMP spoke to the fire team about the RCMP search and rescue, with some members showing interest in taking the search course.

May 26, SaskEnergy will be facilitating a gas safety presentation with Kamsack’s fire team.

Practices continue weekly in order to stay on top of fire and rescue operations and to be as prepared as possible when the fire alarm rings.

Members continue to sell tickets on their fundraising draw with the first prize being $3,000 in gas and groceries. Tickets are available through fire department members and at the town office.
