Cobras hand out awards after championship season

With the euphoria of winning the SEHL title still fresh, the Canora Cobras held their annual awards banquet at Rainbow Hall on April 26.

CANORA - After reaching the ultimate goal and winning the Sask East Hockey League championship, the Canora Cobras held their annual awards banquet at Rainbow Hall on April 26.

Coach Darren Schwartz had the pleasant duty of handing out team awards.

Logan Foster of Kamsack and Brad Sentes of Regina shared the Most Valuable Player award. Sentes also took home awards for Top Goalie and Playoff MVP.

Players Choice and Fans Choice awards went to Team Captain Ryley Stefanyshyn of Canora. Carter Dereniwsky of Canora was another double winner, taking home Rookie of the Year and Top Scorer awards. For the playoffs and regular season combined, Dereniwsky totaled 22 goals and 26 assists for 48 points in 22 games.

Cody Dubas of Invermay was named Best Defenceman, and Carson Dennis of Melville, originally of Canora, earned the Most Improved Player award.

In addition to winning the league championship, a number of highlights made the 2024/25 season one to remember for the Cobras.

Regular season and playoffs combined, the Cobras played 23 games, with a record of 20 wins, only two regulation losses and one overtime loss.

Brad Sentes had a perfect record, playing a total of 18 games and winning them all, including all eight playoff victories.

Two of the Cobras won league awards, Rookie of the Year Carter Dereniwsky, and Darren Schwartz, who won Coach of the Year for the second season in a row.

The Cobras won the first round of provincials before being defeated by the Foam Lake Flyers, the eventual Provincial C Champions, with the final game going into overtime.

In addition to the player awards, at the awards banquet the Cobras also paid tribute to:

  • All the players
  • Hardworking board members
  • Dedicated volunteers
  • Coaching staff
  • Rink/kitchen staff
  • Loyal fan support
  • Valued sponsors
  • All those who supported the Cobras on social media

The final word goes to outgoing General Manager Cal Homeniuk, “I will just fade away into the sunset as a champion!”
